Why this voyage is special
Few holidays allow you to experience so much of the world while unpacking only once.
This journey brings together iconic cities, remote islands, tropical coastlines and one of the world’s great engineering landmarks. Between destinations, extended periods at sea provide time to settle into life aboard Queen Elizabeth and enjoy the ship as an important part of the experience.
The Grand World Journey Itinerary
Queen Elizabeth begins her voyage in Southampton before sailing south towards Lisbon, Tenerife and Praia in Cape Verde.
These opening destinations provide a gradual transition from Europe into warmer waters while allowing guests to become familiar with the ship and establish their rhythm for the months ahead.
Cruiseco tip: Settle in gradually
The first sea days are an opportunity to organise your stateroom, explore the ship and develop a comfortable onboard routine. On a voyage of this length, the small practical details can make a significant difference.
Cape Town is one of the defining destinations of the voyage, with Queen Elizabeth scheduled to remain overnight.
The extended visit creates more time to discover the city and its surroundings, from Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront to the Cape Peninsula and nearby wine regions.
The journey also includes Gqeberha, formerly Port Elizabeth, and Durban, providing a broader introduction to South Africa’s coastline.
After leaving South Africa, Queen Elizabeth crosses the Indian Ocean with calls at Le Port in Réunion and Port Louis in Mauritius.
These island destinations introduce volcanic scenery, tropical landscapes and multicultural traditions before the ship continues towards Southeast Asia.
The Asian section of the voyage includes Port Klang, with touring opportunities to Kuala Lumpur, followed by an overnight stay in Singapore.
Queen Elizabeth then visits Hong Kong overnight, Manila in the Philippines and Bali before travelling south towards Australia.
The overnight calls in Singapore and Hong Kong provide additional time to explore beyond a conventional daytime visit, including opportunities to experience each city after dark.
Queen Elizabeth arrives in Australia through Fremantle, with access to Perth, before continuing to Kangaroo Island, Melbourne and Burnie.
The ship then reaches Sydney for an overnight stay, providing time to experience the harbour, the Sydney Opera House and the city’s surrounding neighbourhoods.
From Sydney, Queen Elizabeth travels across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand.
The itinerary includes Lyttelton for Christchurch, Wellington, Tauranga and Auckland before continuing into the South Pacific. Visits to Suva and Apia are followed by a crossing of the International Date Line and the longer journey towards Hawaii.
This section combines New Zealand’s cities and landscapes with the warmer island destinations of Fiji and Samoa.
Queen Elizabeth is scheduled to visit three Hawaiian islands, with calls at Kahului on Maui, Nawiliwili on Kauai and Honolulu on Oahu.
From Hawaii, the voyage crosses to Los Angeles before beginning its journey south along the Pacific coast of the Americas.
Following Los Angeles, Queen Elizabeth visits Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala and Puntarenas in Costa Rica.
These calls combine coastal scenery, historic centres and opportunities to explore further inland before the ship reaches the Panama Canal.
A full transit of the Panama Canal is one of the signature experiences of the voyage.
Rather than simply visiting a nearby port, Queen Elizabeth is scheduled to travel through the canal from the Pacific to the Caribbean. Guests can follow the ship’s progress through the locks and waterways from different locations around the vessel.
Panama Canal operations and transit timings remain subject to local authorities and operational requirements.
After transiting the Panama Canal, Queen Elizabeth visits Oranjestad in Aruba before continuing to Miami.
The final stage of the world voyage crosses the Atlantic, with a call at Praia da Vitória in the Azores before Queen Elizabeth returns to Southampton on 17 May 2029.
World cruises and grand voyages are planned several years in advance. As a result, destinations, ports of call, overnight stays and voyage durations may be revised by the cruise line prior to departure. Travellers should consider all itinerary details as indicative until final documentation is issued by the cruise line.
The rhythm of a world voyage
A world voyage is not simply a collection of individual port calls. The days at sea are central to the experience.
Longer crossings provide time to enjoy the ship at a more relaxed pace, participate in activities, attend entertainment and prepare for the next destination. They also create a sense of progression as Queen Elizabeth moves between oceans, climates and continents.
Prospective guests should consider whether they will enjoy consecutive sea days as much as the destinations themselves. For travellers who appreciate life aboard, these passages can become some of the most memorable parts of the journey.
Sailing aboard Queen Elizabeth
For approximately four months, Queen Elizabeth will be more than a way of travelling between destinations. The ship will become your home.
When selecting this voyage, consider the complete onboard experience, including stateroom space, storage, dining preferences, quieter areas and the amount of private space you may want during longer passages at sea.
Choosing your stateroom
Stateroom choice takes on greater importance during an extended voyage.
An inside stateroom may make the complete journey more accessible and suit guests who expect to spend most of their time elsewhere on the ship. An oceanview stateroom provides natural light, while a balcony creates a private outdoor space during sea days and scenic passages.
Suites offer more room for relaxing and entertaining but represent a considerably larger overall investment.
Location is also important. Consider proximity to lifts, dining venues and open decks, as well as potential foot traffic and distance from key areas of the ship.
Cruiseco tip: Choose for months, not days
Think about natural light, storage, bathroom layout, access to laundry facilities and how much private living space you will want. A stateroom that feels comfortable for a one-week holiday may feel very different over a journey of approximately four months.
